| Sometimes multiple cavities or large fillings can act as wedges which split weakened and thin teeth as you chew food. In these situations, a crown is needed to reinforce the weakened tooth. A crown is like a porcelain tooth-shaped cover which braces and protects the tooth from the outside, stopping the tooth from splitting.
